The explanation....

I am still trying to contrive a great story with acts of bravery and boldness to explain away Seth's broken arm. Unfortunately, my imagination hasn't served me well, so we will have to tell the boring truth.

To be perfectly honest, no one saw what happened. There were six people in our house, but all we heard was the big old THUD. And then the scream. Any of you who are Mom's know what I am talking about. I knew instantly that it was not the "normal, everyday" fall. In Seth's words, "Mom, I was just tryin' to run!!!" As I mentioned in his last broken-arm post, Seth rarely walks. Running is a necessity of life. It is the only way to get from A to B.

There is one other piece to this puzzle. We have another child who may have been somewhat involved. This individual has an amazing ability to leave a trail. She can always be located by the simple act of following the items that belong to her. And there just happened to be a jacket belonging to this certain individual right smack in the middle of the floor by the fall. Now, be it known, I do not KNOW that the jacket was involved, however, our Pergo floor can make a great surface to slip on should an unknowing little boy try to run with a jacket in the way.

Half an hour later, Seth (the boy who simply doesn't cry for more than a minute or so) is still crying. And bracing his arm. And it is swelling. And looking rather misshapen.

Any of you who know me well, know that I don't care much for our medical care here. So, I started packing the bags. Seth and I traveled to the nearest Children's Hospital, where I knew he would receive appropriate care. He broke, completely, his radius. And it wasn't lined up. (I think we could have told you this.) Did you know, however, that a young kiddo can take a bone that has up to a 30 degree angle on it and still heal properly??? Thank heavens I heard it from someone I feel I can trust or I may not have believed it. Unfortunately, his arm was much too swollen to cast, so he got a half-cast wrapped up and a sling. And orders to have it re-casted in a week with a full cast.

One week later, Seth got a full cast from a (gulp) local doc. It was, of course, Seth's favorite color green. And just for fun, they wrapped it with a bit of glow-in-the-dark cast. How cool is that!
It has now been two more weeks, and we just went in for his two week check. The (local) doc says that his bone has moved more and he nervously said he "thought" it was still okay. But only because he is still so young. "If he was older we would definitely be doing surgery." Gulp. Well, I guess we go back in a week and see how it is doing. And get a new cast. Hopefully I can convince the doc to let me have a roll of glow in the dark casting so we can get creative with his next cast. It is summer time after all, and he can't swim, so we better do something fun, right???

Such a cute picture. And I totally approve of the color of the cast. What a bummer to miss a summer of swimming.

I confess it would be making me crazy to not know how it happened :)

What a trooper, Seth! I had a glow in the dark cast when I fractured my wrist too. Gabe and Hailey wanted me to stand in a closet with them, and with the door closed a little too often. It was fun though! We love you!

Poor guy! But it's true -- kids' bones are remarkable and can rebuild in a way ours can't. Nice cast!

Hey Deann, THanks for your post on our blog. I've fallen off the edge of the blogging earth - I haven't even looked at it for over a month. My hands are literally full. I guess you do understand the broken arm thing - we didn't get glow in the dark but we did get waterproof so he still got to swim - what a sight!
We'd so love to see you guys if you are ever in Utah with any time to spare. You can e-mail me at kelleenpotter@hotmail.com - it would be so fun to catch up.
Your kids are darling.
