Percussion?

This week is Kirsti's 12th birthday. I can hardly believe that the time has flown by so quickly. Barring anymore computer failures this week, I hope to post several fun things about her. So tune in (or ignore it if you choose)....here she is.

Last year in the general music class at school, the 5th graders were exposed to many different band instruments in hopes of guiding them to what instruments they may like to learn. Kirsti's comments began, we tried such-and-such today, but Mrs. R is encouraging me to think about percussion. Huh? I blew it off at first. Then the comments became more frequent. The band teacher tunes in quickly when she sees a pianist. And Kirsti (yes, I am biased) is an amazing pianist. She has the most incredible natural gift. She plays, transposes, and composes. She can just sit down and play. I must admit I am jealous of this musical talent. Anyhow, did you know that band teachers really, really like a pianist on percussion? I didn't. I just envisioned drums. And Kirsti on drums? It just didn't seem quite, uh, compatable.

Well.....come the end of summer, guesss what she settled on??? Percussion. So, we ordered the required percussion set and I was getting used to the idea. Then, band started. Guess what? She liked it. Now it has been a semester. Kirsti has become pretty good on that glockenspiel. And is learning all the drums. And the cymbals. And guess what??? SHE LOVES IT! You go Kirsti! You never fail to surprise me, girl!
